Leaders Born or Made? Discuss
Are leaders born or made? Discuss
“Are leaders born or made?”
Many people have asked this question. However, they tend to give different answers based on their perceptions. Some of the factors that influence perception is past experience of leadership and shared knowledge.
For instance, someone may have experienced good leadership from someone who seemed to be a naturally born leader.
On the other hand, someone may have experienced good leadership from someone who was nurtured and trained to be a leader. These two scenarios would lead to different answers to the said question. However, one reason can outweigh the other.
Ideally, all leaders pass through the process of birth. In other words, all human beings who have breath were born. Many leaders have family backgrounds and their places of birth. Today, some documentaries explain the origin of different leaders.
These documentaries focus on both political and business leaders. For instance, the former president of the United States of America, Barack Obama, is said to have been born in Kenya.
Additionally, some countries have experienced both corrupt and ethical leaders. For instance, the media has recorded different cases of riots against lousy leadership in different countries.
In the early ages, the former leader of Germany, Adolf Hitler, is recorded to have killed many people. In this case, both wrong and good leaders are born (Heideking 2018, p240).
As far as excellent leadership qualities are concerned, leaders are supposed to learn and put them into practice (Northouse 2018, p144). Today, many learning institutions offer leadership courses.
Moreover, a good number of people have graduated with degrees and masters in different leadership programs such as masters in leadership management.
These programs have enabled many leaders to identify good leadership qualities in their respective fields. Additionally, various business conferences bring together all business leaders around the world.
In such conferences, leaders can acquire new leadership skills in the field of business. They also learn from their counterparts. A senior manager would tend to learn from another senior manager who is doing well in the same industry.
In the contemporary world, many leaders attend mentorship and benchmarking programs in different countries of their choice. Many leaders from developing countries tend to benchmark from developed economies. They consider this as an opportunity to learn new technologies and leadership skills.
Notably, leaders learn from successful people (Antonakis and Day 2017, p200). Learning from peers is one of the learning strategies. Likewise, leaders learn from their colleagues. Generally, many leaders develop excellent leadership skills through learning.
Moreover, many leaders have an education background. Education is a crucial aspect of the attainment of knowledge to lead.
In conclusion, leadership skills are obtained through learning. According to this discussion, I would say that leaders are made. The main reason why leaders are made is that they tend to learn excellent leadership skills.
In this regard, many leaders are not born with leadership qualities. These qualities are acquired through education, training, and mentorship. Leaders can also learn new technological developments in leadership through various leadership seminars and summits.
